What’s the point of beautiful gardens or collections of planted containers if you can’t sit back and enjoy them in comfort!? Maintaining or refurbishing “patio furniture” gives a high return of lounging pleasure from a minimum of effort. A little care can also extend the life of your favorite outdoor furnishings, saving you money… to spend on more plants!

CLEAN

General cleaning can be done with old-fashioned soapy water. On stubborn spots, scrub with a brush or use paste of baking soda and water. Tree sap can take a bit more effort to remove. For the least chance of damage, coat the sap with undiluted Murphy’s oil soap, let it sit for 15 minutes to breakdown the sap, and then scrub off. Be sure to rinse things well, once clean.

When cleaning items made of wood or metal it’s helpful to towel dry them, then place them in the sun to ensure they are thoroughly dry before use. The same can be said of cushions, which should be cleaned with a minimal dousing of water, to reduce the chance of mildew.

PAINT

Changing or just refreshing the color of patio furniture is quick and easy with a range of spray paints available for wood, metal and even plastic. Always clean and dry furniture before applying paint. Rusted metal or raw woods should also be sanded and primed. Exercising the patience to finish a piece with two lighter coats of paint, rather than one heavier coat will give a more attractive and more protective finish.

water repellent fabric

PROTECT

Spray-on UV protectant and water repellants can be applied to fabrics – no more mildewed cushions and sun faded umbrellas!! They can also be very helpful for keeping plastic furniture or children’s play sets from fading.

SHELTER

Having your furniture looking great won’t mean much if it gets tossed about in high winds or snow- dumped, water-logged and frozen in winter. Move or cover outdoor furnishings, as weather dictates, to get the longest life and enjoyment from your partners in lounging.
